A beautifully sculpted and well thought out monument.
This monument stands in tribute to Johan Rudolph Thorbecke, a 19th century Dutch statesman credited with writing the liberal Constitution of the Netherlands that removed power from the king and more to the States General, and thus to the people. It guaranteed more religious, personal and political freedom to the people.
The monument is in two parts. One part is dedicated to Thorbecke. Sculpted in white marble, it depicts Thorbecke sitting at a desk in his study, looking obliquely backwards towards Binnenhof. The second depicts a scene from modern times and is sculpted in stainless steel statue. It depicts two men and a woman at a table looking over the Dutch Constitution.
