Hotel Restaurant Umberto

We enjoyed our stay. A surprisingly quiet hotel (busy road outside but no traffic noise). Very clean with friendly, helpful staff who speak good English. Our meal in the restaurant was very, very good. The restaurant is clean and stylish with a lovely atmosphere, good food and our gluten free diet was accommodated easily. We arrived with our small, quiet dog and were welcomed. We discovered on checking out that the hotel no longer accepts dogs but they did not turn us away - thank you. What a pity other dog owners have behaved so badly that the hoteliers no longer feel they can have dogs to stay, otherwise we would definitely have booked on our next trip.

Had business with a diagnostic company nearby in Wijchen, needed a local place to stay overnight that was convenient and economic. My expectations were not high...but for a 24hr stay after a 750Km train journey I needed a local hotel for an early-ish morning meeting. This restaurant/hotel wasn’t easy to get to (see later!), but the hotel & rooms themselves were clean, comfortable, inviting and functional. Flat screen TV & free high speed WiFi - the latter being essential. The double bedroom was composed of two single beds with duvets, side by side. Bathroom with shower was compact, but clean, convenient and had a radiator in it to warm up the bathroom on a cold night! As per normal in Europe face-flannels/clothes were not provided...bring your own, as I always do. Otherwise there were plenty of towels, floor towel, etc. NOTE: I had to walk to the hotel at the local station does NOT have a taxi service/telephone/taxi rank! It’s a good 24min walk along some dark small semi-country streets. A lady might find it somewhat intimidating. Nearest taxi service I could see would be in Nijmegen....and indeed Wijchen is more like an outskirt of Nijmegen. In fact one could take the train to Nimegen, hop on a taxi at this "major" station and get to the hotel in Wijchen in a convenient, quick & inexpensive manner. Hotel staff were friendly, helpful & got me a taxi for my morning meeting in Wijchen. all in all - a very good experience.
